Suddenly Sunday

True Southern football is an all-consuming experience best characterized by cool weather, hot grills, and a passion that is without rival.  On Friday night in Welcome, the best of Southern football came together to produce a hard-hitting conference opener that saw the host North Davidson Black Knights finally topple the Mount Tabor Spartans in a 7-6 defensive struggle.

The scene I encountered on Friday night was straight out of a Hollywood script.  Although the weather was less than favorable (a line of thunderstorms had delayed kickoffs across the central Piedmont), I followed a long stream of taillights bound for a singular destination.  I exited my car, saw the bright lights of Palmer Field in the distance, and was immediately overcome by the wonderful smells of fried chicken and barbecue.  The fact that the Spartans were in town promised a special evening of football, indeed, but the atmosphere was heightened by the fact that the Black Knights were also celebrating Homecoming.

I have been searching all season for "the buzz", the feeling I get when the football stars align and produce a special night.  North Davidson delivered within thirty seconds of my arrival.

After setting up shop in the press box, I grabbed my toys and went hunting.  It was not long until I encountered a group of students hovering by the end zone watching their "guests" warm up.  I enjoyed a good conversation with Caleb and his friends.

One of the things that Caleb (middle) let me know was that their chief rivalry was now Mount Tabor.  When I was in high school, the rivalry between North Davidson and Lexington was fraught with intensity and bad intentions.  Now, things have changed.  The link above should play in your favorite media player.

At halftime I sauntered down to the field to make a visit to the student section and met some really enthusiastic students who were more than happy to talk to Finally Friday!.

Hopefully I get some Pop Quiz! contestants from this year's Homecoming Court.  I will post them as soon as I get them back.  In the meantime, Mason Linker of the Winston-Salem Journal provides the particulars of the game here .  I am always happy to share a space with someone I can learn from, and Mason is no different.

Pop Quiz! Bailey Tyner- R.J. Reynolds High School

When I started this blog, I honestly never expected the kind of reception this blog has received so far.  I'm grateful to the administrators, students and student-athletes who are making this endeavor a lot of fun.  One such source of help is Reynolds AD Brad Fisher, who responded to my Twitter solicitation for Pop Quiz contestants in short order.  He assured me he would get a football player to participate (which, quite frankly, is cool because they've got bigger things to do this week).

Imagine my surprise when my inbox received an email from one Bailey Tyner, the starting quarterback for the Demons.  He was ready and willing to do the Pop Quiz, and did a great job.  See for yourself:

1)     Identify yourself! Name, school, age and class please!
My name is Bailey Tyner, I go to Reynolds High School and I'm in the class of 2014.

2)     What is your claim to fame? What do you do? (Sports, clubs, class offices, etc.)
I play football and baseball at Reynolds. I'm the varsity quarterback for the Demons and I'm also in Key Club, FCA and Spanish club.

3)     I grew up with a poster of Terry Bradshaw on my wall.  What quarterbacks/athletes are on your wall?  Why?
I always looked up to Nomar Garciaparra, who played for my favorite baseball team, the Red Sox. For football, Drew Brees is who I've looked up to since I was a kid. I looked up to him because he's not the biggest quarterback, but he's a winner, he's a great overall quarterback, he's a great leader and is a role model in his community. I also really like Cam Newton, he has all the confidence in the world and that's important for a quarterback.

4)     So, I watched some of your highlight videos.  How long have you been playing quarterback?  When did you know that the QB position was what you wanted to play?
I've been playing quarterback since Pop Warner for the South Fork Panthers. Going into my first season of football, I actually started out at Wide Receiver for the first game. After that first game the coach switched me to Quarterback, and since that day I knew that this was the position I wanted to play.

5)     One Direction or Justin Bieber?  Seriously.  Just between us. Nobody will know.
Justin Bieber, definitely.   Not a big fan but I'd pick him over One Direction every time.
Ed. Note:  Big-time answer for Mr. Quarterback here…I expected “neither” for an answer.  Bonus points.

6)     Your high school is a registered historical landmark.  Apart from that, what makes Reynolds High School a special place?
The students, staff, clubs, athletic programs and the community are just a few of the things that make this school so special. There isn't a school in Forsyth County that is like Reynolds. The mixture of great academics, great art program, athletics and the diversity of the school are special. I'm very glad I go to this school and I'm proud to be a Demon.

7)     There’s a rumor of a “Gold-Out” at the stadium Friday night.  How much energy do the players get from the Reynolds Rowdies?
It definitely helps up get pumped up, we have a good group of Rowdies every year and this year isn't any different.

8)     What are your plans after high school? (College, professional ambition, etc.)
I want to play college football somewhere, so that's my main goal. If for some reason that doesn't work out, I still will go to college, and I want to major in Sports Management or Sports Medicine. Everybody wants to play professional sports, but I'd also want to be an athletic trainer, or work in the business side of sports or maybe even coach. My Dad's a graphic designer and I've got some interest in that, too.

9)     If you couldn’t be a football player, what sport or activity would you choose?
Probably just stick to baseball, which I've been playing since I was 4. I used to play the drums so I might pick that up again.

10) I’ll be there Friday against East.  Tell me what I shouldn’t miss about the experience.  What would you tell a first-time visitor to a Reynolds game to look for?
Good thing you're going to be at this game because it's going to be an exciting one. Big games at DTS are always can't miss games. You're not going to want to miss a thing on Friday. The game time environment makes you want to go out on the field and strap up. You get into the game and it's just a great place to be on a Friday night. I'd tell a first-time visitor to look for our band which is good, our crazy rowdies who keep everybody pumped up,  two classy programs out on the field, great sportsmanship, great talent on both teams, an awesome game environment, amazing fans and to expect a great football game.
I tell you what, I'm starting to love this gig.  I'm so frustrated with hearing about the "sad state of our young people".  Each of our Pop Quiz contestants have multiple activities and aren't identified by one specific thing.  I'm looking forward to meeting more of the Triad's finest!

Want to take the Pop Quiz? Know someone who should?  Stay tuned to the blog to find out where we'll be next!

The Eagles Fly on Friday

The East Forsyth Eagles defeated the Mount Tabor Spartans 28-7 in impressive fashion Friday night, spoiling the Spartans' home opener.  Running back Lavaughnte' Smith carried 21 times for 104 yards, while Eagle quarterback Garrison Duncan added 107 of his own to an astonishing rushing total of 305 yards for the game.  Marc Pruitt of the Winston-Salem Journal provides a full wrap-up here: http://www2.journalnow.com/sports/2012/aug/25/wssport08-east-forsyth-is-too-much-for-mount-tabor-ar-2543965/

Game Notes:
  • Lavaughnte' Smith gained 91 yards in the first half, and tallied two touchdowns.  He sat out until Mount Tabor cut the deficit to 21-7, returned to the huddle, and rushed for 15 yards the first time he touched the ball.
  • The Eagle offense looked a lot like Jim Grobe's Wake Forest offense, with few huddles and calls made at the line.  Garrison Duncan executed the offense to near-perfection, and showed good judgment on the read option.
  • Mount Tabor punter Ben Carson probably had a bittersweet night.  He was probably happy to get a lot of game action, but unfortunately it was due to the Spartans' inability to move the ball.
  • The Spartans were forced to go to the air early in the second half, and it proved to be very effective.  Quarterback Raekwon Brown has a good arm, and the Junior looks to have a lot of promise.
In Addition:
  • I really enjoyed the Mount Tabor spirit squads, particularly the talented Mount Tabor marching band.

  • The Mount Tabor students were vocal until the bitter end, adding to a great game atmosphere.

  • East Forsyth traveled well, and had very vocal support.  In all, a great night for the Eagles. Wish I had a better image...

An Introduction

Some guys buy motorcycles.  Some guys get divorces.  Some guys get tattoos.  Me?  I'm live-tweeting high school football games.  For free. Follow me at @JMundyFballFri.

Welcome to my mid-life crisis.

Some brief history:  My step-daughter, Morgan, spent her Junior and Senior years as a varsity cheerleader at Parkland Magnet High School.  I thought this was a great idea, since it gave me plenty of excuses to get out of the house and watch sporting event...er, support my step-daughter.  As the basketball season heated up this past winter, I began to realize how much I enjoyed going to these prep sporting events.  I began to lament Morgan's imminent graduation and started thinking of ways to keep prep football and basketball as part of my weekly routine.

All hail the power of Twitter!  I sent a mass tweet offering my services for free to anyone needing assistance with 2012 football coverage.  Kenny Beck, the sports director at NBC affiliate WXII, accepted my offer and here I am.

Important Note:  I am not a WXII employee.  I am not compensated by the station nor do I wish to be.  I'm also not a professional sports journalist (if you haven't already figured that out).  My dossier includes one year of writing for UNCC's University Times,  a season working the video screens at the University of Tennessee, and a season volunteering with the now-defunct Charlotte Sting.  This was all a long, long time ago.

Simply put, I am a fan of the passion and energy that student-athletes bring to their respective tasks.  Only the top percent of the top percent will ever play sports at a higher level, so every game is life-and-death as Senior Night looms on the horizon.  I care nothing for recruiting, and know even less about it.  For instance, I watched Ja'Shawn Joyner of Reagan dismantle Glenn last week, and I have no idea whether he is college material or not.

I DO know that he and his troops opened up a can on a Glenn team stocked with some very good athletes.

At any rate, I'm aware that I may spend this entire season live-tweeting and blogging to an audience of 5.  I don't care.  This is an experiment.  I'm watching football- I win either way.

Anyhoo, I have to go.  After all, it's Finally Friday.
