So Nice, I Posted it Twice- the Catherine Wayne Pop Quiz!

Beach Night!
I love it when a plan comes together.  My idea for the Pop Quiz! segment was to find the best and the brightest students that our area high schools had to offer, and give them a chance to represent their schools and themselves in an online forum. So far, I've yet to be disappointed.
This week's participant comes to us from Mount Tabor High School, at the recommendation of Principal Ed Weiss himself.  She is the President of the student body which, as I found out, entails so many duties that I included a link to the full description.
Frankly, she humbles me a bit.  As a matter of fact, everyone I've interviewed to date has humbled (shamed?) me.  When I was in high school, my responsibility list was as follows:
Go to school.
Work at the car wash across from school.
The end.
Anyway, before I get too wistful about my own shortcomings, I'm happy to introduce you to Miss Catherine Wayne.  Cat?

Almost Friday- Reagan vs. Davie

Marching orders have been given, cameras recharged and research begun as Finally Friday! heads to Pfafftown for this week's game between the Reagan Raiders and Davie War Eagles.  This is technically my second trip to Reagan, the first being their week one trouncing of the Glenn Bobcats.  At the time, however, there was no blog and @FinallyFri336 was mere hours old.  I also had the privilege of seeing the Raiders on my second trip to North Davidson a couple of weeks ago, and I'm looking forward to seeing them again.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Press Box

I love Davie, but getting to the press box can be a challenge, especially if one of the gates is locked and accidentally unattended.  When this happens, one has to meander down to the other end of the sideline and walk through the visiting cheerleaders and, occaisonally, the visiting band.  It wouldn't be a problem on this night, however, because Mount Tabor NEVER trav...

Pop Quiz! Caroline Wooten- North Davidson High School

When anyone asks me what I like best about covering prep sports so far, I have an easy answer: I'm constantly reminded that our community is filled with bright kids who are into much more than video games and Keeping Up with the Kardashians.

In fact, later today I will be creating a separate page strictly to display this season's Pop Quiz! participants.  I would encourage all visitors to this blog to read through each profile, even if it is about a student at a rival school. Each student's answers have been impressive in his or her own way, and this week's entrant is no different.

This past weekend, I got an unsolicited email in my inbox that said the following:

"Hello, my name is Caroline Wooten, and I am a varsity cheerleader at North Davidson High School. I just wanted to thank you for featuring North Davidson on your blog for the past two weeks! We're having a very good season, so I hope you drop by another game soon! Your blog is great and I'll make sure to tell everyone about it! Keep up the good work and have a great day!"

What?

I was shocked and moved at the same time.  I immediately asked Caroline if she wanted to participate in our Pop Quiz! and she readily accepted.  To my ultimate delight, Caroline fits right in with all of our other participants this year...but I'll let her tell you.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Miss Caroline Wooten!

Pop Quiz! Catherine Wayne- Mount Tabor High School

  1. Go to school.
  2. Work at the car wash across from school.
  3. The end.
Anyway, before I get too wistful about my own shortcomings, I'm happy to introduce you to Miss Catherine Wayne.  Cat?

Cat rolls the Quad at Wake Forest
1)     Identify yourself! Name, school, age and class please!

Catherine Allie Wayne, Mount Tabor Spartan, 17, Senior.

2)     What is your claim to fame? What do you do? (Sports, clubs, class offices, etc.)

I am Mount Tabor’s Student Council President and I am in several clubs in addition to student council. The thought of me playing a sport is pretty funny, but I did try out for women’s lacrosse freshman year for what it’s worth.

3)     So I Googled your name and it took me to the Student Council section of the Tabor website (http://www.wsfcs.k12.nc.us/Page/6308).  The description of the President’s position seems like a lot of work.  What does it take to execute your job as President as well as do your homework?

Wednesdays mean Student Council. Each Wednesday, except for one a month, I have either an Upper House, Lower House, or Officer meeting. While I have a ton of work to do in this role, the student council sponsor Mr. Allen Smith makes it so fun and so easy to handle. I am lucky to have the world’s coolest and most hilarious officers working with me so we always mess around while getting our work done.  I have really hunkered down with some seriously hard classes this year. The good news is I have a free period where I can tackle as much homework as I can so I can have more of my afternoons free. My best friend Will and I do homework together every night so this makes sitting for hours on end working so much better.

4)     What makes Mount Tabor special to you?  Why does it stand out?

What makes Tabor special to me? I could do some serious word count damage on this question. When I walked into Mount Tabor freshman year, I knew that I was home. There is something about the old hallways and the people at Tabor that make it so welcoming and comfortable. As the years have gone on, I have had the pleasure of working with some of the most active administrators and devoted teachers. Tabor stands out from all other high schools because of our roots in tradition. From our amazing drumline to our annual homecoming dodge ball tournament, there are so many things that make Mount Tabor unique.

5)     One Direction or Justin Bieber?  Go.

I’m not going to say that I don’t have Justin Bieber’s CD in my car at this very second. I’m also not going to say that I know all the words to all of the songs on it. That’s pretty much all I don’t have to say about that.

6)     Give me three reasons why a Spartan is better than a Demon.
1) Our student section is easily eight-hundred times better and more spirited than that of Reynolds. They have the same three cheers while we have a beautiful variety in our artillery of spirit.
2) Our mascot is a Spartan who is ready to go into battle at any second for Sparta’s honor while Reynolds’ mascot is Lucifer himself.
3) I’m not sure about the exact numbers on this one, but I think the last time Reynolds beat us in football was at least 5000 years ago. Our football team reigns superior to theirs.
Disclaimer: That was all in jest, Reynolds is a great school and they have a lot going for them.

7)     I covered the East Forsyth game at Mount Tabor a few weeks ago.  Like a lot of other schools playing the Eagles this year, the score wasn’t in your favor but the student section was WAY crazy.  My blog was hours old at that time and I was just live-tweeting the game.  Give me the rundown on Tabor City.

Eleven things everyone needs to know about Tabor City:
1. There is no feeling like the anticipation of the third quarter festivities at our football games, home or away.
2. To be in the student section, one MUST be dressed up and cheering (even the freshmen).
3. If we are losing, a halftime monologue will be delivered to the entire student section by one senior (a favorite is the halftime speech from the movie MIRACLE).
4. When third quarter rolls around and the drum line walks up the track, the crowd goes WILD.
5. During the drumline piece "H2O" everyone is singing and dancing while throwing water from water bottles everywhere, I always leave soaked.
6. DON’T THROW THE BOTTLES AFTER H20
7. We keep things "Dash Appropriate" (If you wouldn't yell it at one of our beloved Advanced Single A Winston-Salem Dash games, we don't yell it at our games).
8. Never sit down unless it's halftime or you WILL get yelled at.
9. Always let the seniors have the front row; the grades are organized in descending order the further up in the stands you go.
10. Corbin “ATM” Martin (44) is probably the most fun player to cheer for. You may even hear an “ATM” chant at the game.
11. Friday night football holds a very special place in the senior’s hearts and I know it will be one of the things we will all miss about Mount Tabor High School.

8)     I’m guessing as Student Council President you have some idea of your future.  What are your plans after high school? (College, professional ambition, etc.)

I want to attend Wake Forest University and double major in Political Science and Economics. Whenever I tell people this they say, “Wow, that’s pretty specific”. It really is, but at the same time I have known that I want to be a business lawyer for some time now. I can’t wait to get into college so I can start to specialize in these areas and get into the nitty gritty of my majors.

9)     When you leave Mount Tabor next year, what will you look back on as the defining moment in your high school career, or has that happened yet?

I think my defining moment at Mount Tabor High School was giving my first speech in front of hundreds of people. I had the honor of speaking at Senior Awards Day last year as the newly elected president. Freshman year I had to recite a monologue in front of my World History class and I was a nervous wreck. I don’t know why I was, I was speaking in front of just twenty people but nonetheless I was shaking, stuttering, and beet red. I honestly don’t know where I found my confidence to speak in front of people, but getting offstage at Awards Day with the entire senior class and their families cheering for me is a feeling I will never forget.

10)  Last question.  You get to have dinner with three leaders (politicians, coaches, preachers, etc.). Who are they and what are you going to talk about?

If I could have dinner with any three people I would choose President Jackson, Henry Clay, and John C. Calhoun. I would love to sit back and watch them argue about States’ Rights, the Fiscal Policy, as well as the “Corrupt Bargain”. I have always been interested in the Jacksonian Era and I would love to sit down with these three men and hear them debate.

Pop Quiz! Hannah Forbes- Glenn High

Because of my documented navigational skills, I arrived in Kernersville last night with a laundry list of things to accomplish.  However, my priority was to find a worthy subject to represent Glenn High in a Pop Quiz.  I figured it was only fair, since Paige Johnson of West just knocked hers out of the park and represented her school extremely well.  So, at halftime I hustled down from the press box to the toga-clad mass of Glenn students and asked a simple question:

"Who's running this show?"

After some stammering, hemming and hawwing multiple voices started crying "Hannah, Hannah, Hannah."  I think the poor soul thought she was in trouble.  After I explained what the Pop Quiz was all about, she readily agreed.  She even called me "Sir".  I knew immediately that this would be good.  She didn't disappoint.

To put it in the dialect of my rural Southern ancestors, the girl done BROUGHT IT.  Ladies and gentlemen, Hannah Forbes!

1)     Identify yourself! Name, school, age and class please!
Hannah Forbes, Glenn High School, 17, and Senior!

2)     What is your claim to fame? What do you do? (Clubs, activities, class offices, etc.)
I play volleyball and soccer, as well as swim for Glenn. I also am secretary of the Leo Club, and participate in Key Club, Elite Ladies, National Honor Society, and Academic Team.

3)     Tell me about Glenn High.  What makes it special to you?
Glenn is special to me mostly because of the people. We are kind of a melting pot because we’ve got so many different types of people and I think it makes for a pretty unique bunch. For the most part, the students and staff are really caring and quick to reach out and offer a helping hand. Additionally, I love the school itself. A lot of renovations or projects have been completed since my freshman year. It has been really cool to the see the positive changes. Whenever people ask me where I go, I’m always proud to say Glenn High School.

4)     I pulled up to the game tonight and you and your classmates are all wearing Togas…um, so what other themes has the student body done, and who comes up with them?
Ha-Ha! This season, the themes we have done thus far are orange and blue tie-dye and neon night. In previous years we have done everything from Indian night (when we play the Southwest Cowboys) to 80’s night.  Normally the seniors discuss what theme we should do each week and we have a twitter (@GHS-hooligans) that we post them on!

5)     Complete this sentence:  This season, I want our football team to beat _________ more than anything.
EAST FORSYTH…of course!

6)     Quick, off the top of your head: One Direction or Justin Bieber?
Hmm…One Direction!

7)     Trash talk time…give me three reasons your school is better all-around than East Forsyth.
1)     Sportsmanship. Last year during football season, a prank war between East and Glenn got pretty dirty. Even though Glenn was not completely innocent, no one from Glenn did permanent and expensive damage to any part of East Forsyth. Also, having played volleyball and soccer against East I’ve learned…Eagles and their Eagle parents can be pretty mean sometimes!
2)     Academics. I feel like is East is constantly ONLY talking about their sports teams. For example, how good their football team is, or the baseball team, the basketball team or their bowling team. You get my point. The reality is there is so much more to high school than just sports. Glenn has so much talent in our chorus, band, drama department, ROTC, dance movement, as well as a ton of kids with academic talent and a great desire to learn. Granted, I’ve obviously never taken a class at East Forsyth, but at Glenn I have never had a bad teacher. Last year as the dates of AP Exams were drawing closer and closer, all of my AP teachers either came in early or stayed late to hold review sessions for their students. This dedication is shown by all teachers, not just those that teach AP courses. Like I said earlier, the faculty at Glenn really does care about each and every student.
3)     Parking. If you’ve ever been to East, you know what a pain it is that after you finally find the school, tucked amidst a winding road and multiple entrances, you have to park on the top of a hill and walk down to the school or stadium. An added bonus is if you get to make the trek in the rain!
4)     I’m sorry but I came up with one more reason, and I think it’s a pretty big one. Does East Forsyth have its own water tower? ;)

8)     Back to the togas.  You guys wore togas on the hottest night of the season so far.  I take it there was no Plan B?
It’s funny that you ask this question, after the game I mentioned to some other students that toga night may be one of the worst ideas we’ve had in a while. By halftime I was drenched in sweat, and my toga was not cooperating. I was beginning to wish we would have gone with the “Scuba Night” theme proposed by fellow senior Cary Shields (Even though it was ridiculous and probably would have been difficult to execute.) It wasn’t until everyone started getting ready for the game that we realized no one really knew how to make a decent toga, but by then it was too late to change the theme. Nonetheless, we all had a good time and a good turnout!

9)     What are your plans after high school? (College, professional ambition, etc.)
I’m not exactly sure where I want to go to school next year but some possibilities are Syracuse University, UNCW, and Carolina. Even though it has changed multiple times throughout high school, I’ve narrowed my major down to three options: Criminology, Communications, or Environmental Science. No matter what profession I end up choosing, I just really hope that I will be helping people and learning new things. I want to LOVE what I do, no matter how long I do it for.

10)  Finally, what would you tell a first-time visitor to a Glenn football game to look for?
I would tell a first-time visitor to look for a little bit of everything. Our drum line performs towards the end of halftime, and they always put a smile on my face, as does the band and dance team!  The cheerleaders never stop working hard doing stunts or cheers to get the crowd involved. Additionally, it’s safe to say if you go to a Glenn football game you have to give the Bobcat a high-five, he’s always around.  The student section is a great place if you’re looking for crazy outfits and even crazier people wearing them! Most importantly however, I would tell someone to buy a cold drink and a hot dog and find a good spot in the stands to watch some of the game. Our football boys work really hard all summer long and continue that hard work every Friday night. They deserve to have us cheering them on whether we are winning or losing.

Well, that was awesome.  Even though I'd be concerned about firing up the undefeated Eagles even more, I admire the fearlessness and confidence!  Thank you, Hannah!

As you can see, our first two Pop Quiz participants are excellent representatives of their school.  Paige and Hannah's answers were very thoughtful and well-written, and I appreciate the effort.  Now, ladies, please stay clear of Senioritis so I can brag on you and say "I met them when..."!

Rookie Mistakes

While I'm sure every fledgling blogger wants to be an instant success, I'm really grateful that no more than five folks are reading my blog thus far.

Why?

I never verified where tonight's game was actually being played.  Really.

I mean, I was prepared.  Media card in a way-too-big laminate, smartphone, HD video camera, everything.   I had even done a feature on the "Home" school.  So, I raced the Deathmobile over to Clemmons so I could be an hour early and soak it all in.

<Crickets>

So, my rustbucket and I have high-tailed it over to K-Vegas and I sit here in the cool comfort of the press box, beside a REAL sportswriter from the Journal.

At least they have complimentary drinks. Fail.
